Season’s Greetings 2007
Once again it is time to wish
our family, friends and
colleagues “ Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year”. May 2007 bring
you and your loved ones good
health, happiness and
prosperity! I would like to take
this opportunity to thank you
also for the many kindnesses
that you have extended to me
during the last 12 months, and,
for the beautiful Christmas
cards, gifts and the good wishes
that you have kindly sent to me.
2006 has been a most emotional
and memorable year for us here
in Thailand. Political unrests
began in 1/06, escalated into a
stalemate during the first eight
months and climaxed in a
not-unexpected “coup” that was
warmly welcomed by the general
public on 19/9/06! Since then,
PM Thaksin has been roaming
restlessly around the world
while his “corrupt regime” was
dismantled and court cases were
filed against his family and
friends. The new and unprepared
government led by reluctant PM
Surayud Chulanont has been
struggling against all odds to
achieve what they promised to
deliver within a year i.e. to
re-establish national unity,
clean up Thaksin’s corruption
mess, bring peace back to the
Deep South and complete a new
constitution for a national
election towards end of 2007.
In spite of the bitter political
struggles and turmoil, Thai
people took time off to
celebrate HM the King’s 60th
anniversary of accession to the
throne on 9/6/06. Since then,
his loyal subjects have been
wearing yellow to show their
love and gratitude to their most
beloved monarch. All-out efforts
have also been made to practice
HM the King’s “Sufficiency
Theory”, based on people’s well
being, more balanced growth and
long-term sustainable economy,
rather than the neck-breaking
short-term economic expansion in
order to keep up with the
winner-takes-all market economy.
Personally, 2006 has been a
rewarding and joyful year for me
and my family. Just before
midnight on 29/3/06, as I was
demonstrating with some one
hundred thousand anti-Thaksinists
in front of the Paragon Complex,
our first grandson, Bene, was
born to Bia and Jeab! On 7/7/06,
two days after our own 38th
wedding anniversary, our second
son, Bik, walked his beautiful
bride, Mas, down the aisle.
On the career front, I have been
delighted to be given the
opportunity to continue to work
in 2007 as a full-time Advisor
of the Bangkok Bank, and, as
professional independent
director of a handful of
companies. I therefore look
forward to meeting and working
with you again in the New Year,
and send you meanwhile my best
wishes.
